Young People Demand Change

As we embrace the diversity that enriches our communities, Intellectual/Developmental Disability (I/DD) Awareness Month takes on a special significance. It's a time to celebrate the unique talents, experiences, and contributions of individuals with disabilities while also raising awareness about the challenges they face.

According to the NACDD, “More than seven million Americans have I/DD. 'Over the last 20 years, the number of people with intellectual or developmental disabilities (I/DD) who live in institutions or other large congregate settings decreased significantly, and now the vast majority live with their families, in their own home, or in some other community living arrangement. People with I/DD are our classmates, neighbors, co-workers, and friends. And the new generation of youth with I/DD expect even more as they become adults — they want to live independently, have careers (not just jobs), get married, and have their own families.” This year, our observance of Developmental Disability Awareness Month is particularly noteworthy as we join hands with the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) to advocate for inclusivity, accessibility, and empowerment.

A Collaborative Effort for Change

The National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) plays a pivotal role in advancing the rights and opportunities of individuals with developmental disabilities across the country. In Massachusetts, our partnerships amplify our efforts to create a more inclusive society where everyone can thrive.

Celebrating Diversity and Resilience

Throughout Developmental Disability Awareness Month, we shine a spotlight on the diverse experiences and remarkable resilience of individuals with disabilities. From artistic achievements to academic success stories, from entrepreneurial endeavors to athletic triumphs, we celebrate the myriad ways in which individuals with disabilities enrich our lives and communities.

Raising Awareness and Dispelling Myths

Education is a powerful tool in dismantling stereotypes and fostering empathy and understanding. Developmental Disability Awareness Month provides an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations, dispel myths, and raise awareness about the rights, needs, and capabilities of individuals with developmental disabilities. Through workshops, partnerships, and community events, we strive to promote a more inclusive and accessible society.

Advocating for Accessibility

Access to education, employment, healthcare, and public spaces is essential for the full participation of individuals with disabilities in society. As we commemorate Developmental Disability Awareness Month, we renew our commitment to advocating for policies and practices that promote accessibility and remove barriers to inclusion. Together, we work towards a future where every individual has equal opportunities and access to resources.

Empowering Voices and Promoting Self-Advocacy

At the heart of the disability rights movement is the principle of self-advocacy – empowering individuals with disabilities to speak up for their rights and needs. Developmental Disability Awareness Month provides a platform for amplifying these voices, promoting empowerment, and fostering a culture of inclusivity where everyone's voice is heard and valued.

Looking Ahead with Hope and Determination

As Developmental Disability Awareness Month draws to a close, our commitment to inclusion and accessibility remains steadfast. We look ahead with hope and determination, knowing that together, we can create a future where diversity is celebrated, barriers are removed, and every individual has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

In Massachusetts, Developmental Disability Awareness Month is not just a time for reflection – it's a call to action. As we join forces with our communities, let us reaffirm our commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone, regardless of ability, is valued, respected, and empowered.
